#NaNoWriMo2015--Get to the Heart of Your Story (writing tip #15)

If you are participating in NaNoWriMo, you are halfway through your month and you might be wondering if you're going to make it all the way through your draft by November 30th.

If you're flagging, take a deep breath (and perhaps a nap) and give yourself the credit you deserve: you've taken on a big challenge and that's a victory all its own!

Did you take a selfie on Day #1? If yes, look it over, put it away, and take another selfie now, on Day #15. If you didn't take an actual photo, picture what you looked like two weeks ago as you embarked on this journey. Were you excited? Anxious? Euphoric? Terrified? All of those wrapped up with hope?

Now, picture yourself on Day #30. How will you look? How will you feel about yourself? If you line those photos side-by-side in your mind, imagine how you will have changed, even over the course of one month. Do you see the smile of victory even as you also see the shadows of exhaustion? That will be a terrific kind of tired!

In order to create, we must take big risks. Most people dream about having written a book--but they don't do the writing. They have many reasons: 1) they might not have the talent 2) they don't have time 3) they can't stay focused 4) it's too much work 5) they have a day job...there are a million reasons why people don't write.

So celebrate yourself because you are risking, you are writing, you are honoring your creative self! All of this takes courage! It also demands generosity of spirit because you are will to share the deepest parts of yourself with others. So take a bow and know I'm applauding you right now!

Go with the flow~Sarah
